More Madeira

Usually Sue & I take the opportunity to chill in Madeira. This year however, I wanted to take the new GX8 on a jeep expedition and see something of the interior so booked a trip with Mountain Expedition. Our guide Joao took us to some great places and we had a short session “off-road” as well. We took the route from Funchal, up to Sao Vicente past Ponta Delgada and across to Santana and then came back via Ribeiro Frio. We got to a height well above the cable car at Monte and for some time the Land Rover was well above the clouds – we couldn’t see Funchal for some time as a thick bank of cloud lay over it. Thoroughly great day out and when we go to Madeira, I’ll take the opportunity to go with these guys again.

  1. The north coast of Madeira Island is a gem. Still unspoilt, and that rugged coastline is a joy. Love Santana too. There’s a hotel called the ‘Quinta do Furrao’ I plan to stay at if I can. Must be great when then evening sun kicks in, and that yellow glow starts, along with a nice dinner & bottle of wine. Heaven ! ( Nice pix, too , Nigel.
